Mobility Service Dogs Inc.

training service dogs to help disabled children and veterans

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability (physical, sensory, psychiatric or intellectual).  Every service dog is individually trained to mitigate their partner's physical and emotional struggles. Service dogs are working animals, not pets.  Working with their partner, service dogs help these individuals attain greater competence and independence in a challenging world.  Only service dogs and their partners are allowed access to public buildings and areas.

Our Mission Statement:

1. To help children and veterans with mobility disabilities by the use of service dogs.

2. To lessen the person's specific disability by individually training every service dog with task-specific skills, obedience to commands, and the ability to negotiate the challenges of public access.

3. To improve the quality of life for these individuals as they gain greater self-esteem and hope through the partnership with our service dogs.  All our dogs are given to the disabled without cost.

All puppies (purebred Golden Retrievers & Labrador Retrievers) are procured from AKC recognized breeders.  After immunizations and veterinary evaluation, our dogs are placed with Puppy Raisers.  These volunteer families agree to care for our dogs and actively participate in our training protocol during the first 18 months of the dog's life.  Obedience, basic task training, and socialization are the primary goals.

Our non-profit organization pays all costs including veterinary care, immunizations, food, trainers, staff, consultants, equipment, toys, purchase costs - until the dog is placed in the partner's home.  The total expenditure per dog is $28,000.

All our dogs spend 20 months with their puppy raising families.  After this time they progress to more intensive and specific training - learning tasks that directly support their disabled partner.  Partners are selected from mobility-disabled young children and U.S. military veterans.

All of us at MSD sincerely thank you for your support.  Any contribution is greatly appreciated by these suffering children, and by the brave service veterans who sacrificed so much for us. Unfortunately, the demand for fully trained service dogs greatly exceeds supply.  Donations from concerned people like you allow us to help disabled individuals improve their quality of life through the partnership with our service dogs.  MSD is cognizant of the ongoing challenges facing the disabled and our staff will remain available to provide consultation and training after placement.

Mobility Service Dogs Inc. sends a special thank you to Wolf’s Lair K9 dog trainers in Northbrook, IL for their support, guidance and excellent training for our dogs.
